Meaning & Analysis

The print is part of KAWS’ No Reply collection which is composed of 10 screen prints, all of which depict sections of a cartoon character’s face or compositions made up of cartoon inspired imagery. The collection captures KAWS’ unique visual style which is characterised by an emphasis on colour, bold gestural lines and a set of distinct graphics, one of which is crossed out eyes, as seen in No Reply 7.

The No Reply collection is similar to Blame Game, a collection of prints made by KAWS in 2014 which show cropped portions of a cartoon character’s face. KAWS has a longstanding interest in cartoons and animation, which can be traced back to his time studying illustration at the New York School of Visual Arts, as well as his early career working as a freelance animator for Jumbo Pictures where he designed the backgrounds for famous cartoon series such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug.
