October 2016 | Christie's London - United Kingdom | Banker - Signed Print |
Banker is a signed digital print made by the critically acclaimed British artist Julian Opie in 2014. The print comes in an edition size of 50 and shows a man in a black suit set against a bright yellow backdrop. The man is depicted from side-on and Opie duplicates the figure’s legs and blurs them which produces an illusion of movement, making it seem as if the man is walking across the composition.
The print can be seen alongside a variety of other digital prints, all of which depict faceless figures captured in motion, walking presumably to or from work. The titles of the prints reveal the professions of the people captured in the prints. The jobs vary from an architect to a mechanic, a nurse to an academic. The way in which Opie renders these figures without faces highlights how they could be anyone which reflects Opie’s interest in depicting the ordinary in his artworks.
Banker captures the essence of Opie’s distinct visual style which is characterised by his use of thick outlines filled with blocks of colour. Opie’s artistic language resonates with the comic book imagery of Roy Lichtenstein as well as the use of outlines by Patrick Caulfield.
