This signed screen print from 2011 is a limited edition of 350 from Howard Hodgkin’s Olympics series. The vertical print offers its viewers a mesmerising abstract representation that evokes the artist’s painterly brushstroke through rich blue wavy patterns. As the title suggests, the work evokes powerfully the movement of water caused by swimming.
Swimming, like Welcome and The Road To Rio, represents Hodgkin’s engagement with the world of agonistic sports. The print, produced by King and McGaw in New Heaven, was made in preparation to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games held in London. For the event, twelve distinguished British artists of the calibre of Bridget Riley, Tracey Emin and of course Hodgkin were asked to each create a poster that could emblematise the spirit of the game coming to London. While some artists, like Anthea Hamilton and Rachel Whiteread, chose to schematically re-invent the famous Olympic symbol, others like Emin dedicated words of admiration to the Olympians, notoriously writing “you inspire me with your determination and I love you”, Hodgkin, as typical of his practice, decided to focus instead on abstraction and colour. The result, Swimming, is an incredibly enchanting whirlwind of fluid painterly marks that beautifully pay homage to the sport.
British artist Howard Hodgkin was a luminary of abstraction. Representing Britain at the 1984 Venice Biennale, winning the Turner Prize in 1985, and knighted in 1992, Hodgkin established a legacy by pushing the boundaries of convention. Indian culture and painting heavily influenced the artist's work, infiltrating it most obviously in his bold colour choices. Evoking the bliss of exotic travels and past memories, Hodgkin's abstract representations provide an intimate insight into his world. The vibrancy of his palette and expression of the brushstrokes distinguished the artist from his contemporaries, seeing him gain international recognition.
