Spilt Ink With Tests is an 11-colour inkjet print created by David Hockney in 2020. This limited edition of 100 prints depicts two ink bottles spilling in the background, with 10 ink tests in different colours lined up on the right of the composition. It is part of Hockney's 220 for 2020 series, produced during the global lockdown, and showcases his innovative use of digital technology in printmaking, continuing his exploration of new media that began in the 1980s.
This experimental composition is divided into two distinct areas: the left side presents two spilling ink bottles, on in blue and the other in red, while the right side displays vertical colour swatches.
This piece represents a continuation of Hockney's exploration of new media, which evolved through various technologies including fax machines, Polaroid collages, photocopiers, and most recently iPads. This ongoing engagement with technology positions Hockney as a pioneer in contemporary printmaking, consistently pushing the boundaries of the medium.
