Man’s Best Friend 6 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford High White paper made in 2016 by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS. In this print, KAWS scribbles thick black lines onto a white backdrop. Looking at this print in isolation, it is impossible to say what is being depicted. However, when viewed alongside the other prints in the Man’s Best Friend collection, it becomes apparent that the work is an abstract print inspired by the popular and much-loved cartoon character, Snoopy.
Throughout the Man’s Best Friend collection, KAWS experiments with a looser, more expressionist style, which contrasts with the graphic style he often uses in his other artworks, characterised by the use of bold and vibrant colours and a set of distinctive graphics and stock characters. The print appears to be taken from the pages of a sketchbook, reflecting the development that goes into KAWS’ artistic creations.
Appropriating a cartoon character is something KAWS often does in his artworks. Other notable cartoons that KAWS has adapted in his prints include The Simpsons, the Smurfs and SpongeBob Square Pants. KAWS enjoys taking these well-known figures and reconfiguring them in his signature artistic style, which always involves giving them crossed out eyes, as is seen in Man’s Best Friend 1 and the other depictions of Snoopy in the Man’s Best Friend collection.
