Untitled (Evoe), executed in 2003 in an edition of 75, is composed of Bridget Riley’s unique, serpentine forms, unrelated to any other conventional, geometric form, that evolved following the great success of the artist’s Stripes series. Like numerous other prints in this series, Untitled (Evoe) is composed of four colours, which work together to create a figure and ground construction.
Like the other works in this series, Untitled (Evoe) is structured on a diagonal grid. This underlying structure gives the composition a forward movement that is tempered by the soft lines of the curved forms. The basic building blocks for these curvilinear works are serpentine segments in solid blocks of colour, which are of varying size. The complex structure of the print makes it seem as if each colour in turn alternately becomes the figure and ground.
The suggested title of the artwork, Evoe, was a cry associated with the intoxicated rites of the Greek god of wine and fertility, Bacchus.
Bridget Riley, a leading figure in the British Op-Art movement, has captivated audiences with her abstract paintings and prints that challenge visual perception. Born in London, 1931, Riley’s artistic journey evolved from semi-Impressionist beginnings to geometric mastery, significantly influencing modern art. Her groundbreaking artworks, from Movement In Squares to the vibrant Stripes series, explore optical phenomena and colour dynamics, creating mesmerising, dizzying effects. With a prolific career spanning over seven decades, Riley’s innovative designs and perceptual disruptions continue to shape contemporary British art, solidifying her enduring influence in the realm of abstract and modern art.
