Shadows I (F. & S. II.208) is a signed screen print on Arches 88 paper made with diamond dust produced by the renowned Pop artist Andy Warhol in 1979. The print comes in an edition size of 15 and shows two blocks of black and pink paint.
The artwork is one of six screen prints in Warhol’s first Shadows portfolio. The portfolio is part of a wider project that developed out of 102 paintings made by Warhol in 1978 which were inspired by the shadows created by the artist’s desk lamp on various surfaces in his New York studio. The abstract compositions mark a significant departure from Warhol’s other artworks in terms of visual style. Warhol is best known for his Pop Art style and depictions of cultural icons and celebrities, however the artist also experimented with producing a number of more abstract pieces, such as those in the Shadows collection, as well as his Sunset and Camouflage collections.
Black dominates Shadows I (F. & S. II.208) and the other prints in the collection which brings a moody and slightly sombre feeling to the series. The use of diamond dust, however, makes the artworks sparkle which resonates with the glamorous interiors of the glitzy night clubs Warhol used to go to with his celebrity friends.
