Meaning & Analysis

Produced in the same year as other key pieces such as Dancer, the artist was in the early days of exploring mediums beyond the street. Whilst the artist’s stickmen are inevitably surrounded by life when painted on urban walls, the figure takes on an emphasised air of isolation when confined to prints.

Depicting a skulking stickman, the figure in Deep averts his eyes from the viewer and appears to be looking at something beyond the frame of the image. With their arms hanging limply by their side, the figure is androgynous as with many of Stik's depictions.

The retracting body richly evokes a sense of withdrawal and reluctance, evincing Stik’s use of line to convey powerful emotions. By focusing on the minute details of the body’s movements, Stik draws the viewer’s attention to the expressiveness and unique language of the physical form.

  • London-based street artist, Stik, is celebrated for his distinctive and minimalistic style. By solely using simple, stick-figures, Stik is able to convey profound messages through his work and advocate for marginalised social communities. Inclusivity and resilience underpin his iconic stick-figure motif, with the likes of Liberty and Single Mum promoting empathy and human connection. Having been homeless when starting out as a graffiti artist, Stik developed an affinity to the Hackney community who helped him find his feet, and he now sees his street art as a way to give back to those who helped him.
