Meaning & Analysis

Liberty combines Stik's characteristic six-line stickman with a keen sense of geography to create a visually arresting piece. Although the work's obvious connection is with the Statue of Liberty, the renowned landmark that Stik's figure evokes in its posture, the piece also has a more particular resonance that is tied to its specific location. Stik's protesting stickman acknowledges the thousands of individual acts of courage that have marked the history of Tompkins Square Park in the course of the park's existence.

The print serves as an eloquent monument to the tenacity of communities that have endured great hardship. The image is inextricably tied to a number of Stik works that are concerned with creating space for the disadvantaged, while shedding a light on urban protest, documenting yet another facet of urban life.

  • London-based street artist, Stik, is celebrated for his distinctive and minimalistic style. By solely using simple, stick-figures, Stik is able to convey profound messages through his work and advocate for marginalised social communities. Inclusivity and resilience underpin his iconic stick-figure motif, with the likes of Liberty and Single Mum promoting empathy and human connection. Having been homeless when starting out as a graffiti artist, Stik developed an affinity to the Hackney community who helped him find his feet, and he now sees his street art as a way to give back to those who helped him.
