Biography
Born in Vancouver in 1952, Hambleton's early life hinted at a rebellious and creative spirit. His journey began with formal studies, graduating from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Quickly distinguishing himself from his peers, Hambleton's early work garnered attention for its innovation and unorthodox approach to street art.
Hambleton's development took a turn upon his arrival in New York City in the late 1970s. It was here that he conceived the “Shadowman” series, featuring works like Fountain Of Youth. These eerie, silhouetted figures painted in black across the urban landscape, lurking in doorways and alleys, provided a provocative commentary on the city's gritty atmosphere.
Throughout the 1980s, Hambleton's work evolved, as he ventured into other series such as the Beautiful Paintings and Horse and Rider series. Despite the evolving themes, his work consistently maintained an edge of social commentary and an element of surprise, which became his trademark.
Major exhibitions that showcased Hambleton's art include his solo shows in New York and European galleries, solidifying his reputation across the Atlantic. His participation in the Venice Biennale in 1984 further elevated his international stature.
