This etching was executed by Lucian Freud in 1990, and portrays the torso and head of a nude woman. With her head resting on her hand, the sitter's arm dynamically protrudes into the lower half of the composition, outlined with thick lines of the etching needle. Particular attention has been given to the model's breasts, which are softly delineated with rounded lines and hatching. Typical of his oeuvre, Freud has captured her portrait with meticulous attention to detail, and intrigues the viewer with her searchful gaze, which lingers outside the left frame of the composition.
Though the identity of this unnamed sitter is unknown, we can observe in Head And Shoulders Of Girl an intimate bond between sitter and artist so typical of Freud's work. Renowned for his risqué love-life, the sitter might have been one of Freud's many lovers who sat for him in the studio.
Lucian Freud is renowned for his distinctive ability to realise tone, texture, and depth through the medium of etching, with only black ink to form his subjects. Head And Shoulders Of Girl demonstrates Freud's insightful handling of the medium, as he casts convincing shadows and tricks of the light with the etching needle alone.
Famed for his representations of the human form, Lucian Freud is one of the 20th Century's most celebrated artists. The grandson of psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, the artist confronts the psychological depth and bare complexities of the human body. From his early works to his celebrated nudes and portraits, Freud's canvases resonate with an almost tactile intensity, capturing the essence of his subjects with unwavering honesty. Freud painted only himself, close friends, and family, which floods his work with an intimacy that is felt by the viewer. His pursuit of honesty through portraiture shaped the trajectory of figurative art in the 20th century.
