The News VI is a signed screen print in colours produced by the ground-breaking American artist and designer, KAWS in 2017. The circular print depicts a close-up section of a cartoon character’s face rendered in a variety of bright colours. Two feminine eyes can be seen against a turquoise background. One eye is rendered in lime green, the other in purple. KAWS adds multi-coloured squiggly lines to the composition, bringing an abstract element to the image.
The print is part of The News collection, a body of nine screen prints, all of which use a circular shape for the base of the print. The series captures KAWS’ unique visual style and artistic language which can be characterised by an emphasis on colour, the use of bold gestural lines and the incorporation of a set of distinctive graphics. KAWS’ style has its roots in graffiti and street art and the artist is often compared to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s.
The eyes rendered in this print both feature KAWS’ trademark crosses. KAWS often incorporates crosses into his artworks, and frequently applies them to his cartoon characters’ eyes, as is seen in The News VI, bringing a slight air of morbidity to his artworks.
