Meaning & Analysis

The print is part of The News collection, a body of nine screen prints, all of which use a circular as opposed to rectangular shape for the composition’s design. This choice of shapes makes the collection stand out from others produced by KAWS. The collection is similar to Blame Game, an earlier set of prints produced by KAWS in 2014. In a similar manner to the prints in The News collection, in Blame Game, KAWS privileges close-up angles, abstraction and the use of bright colours.

KAWS’ unique visual language stems from his experimentation with graffiti. The artist started practising graffiti as a teenager while living in New Jersey. KAWS continued developing his graffiti skills in New York where he attended the School of Visual Arts and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration in 1996. KAWS’ artistic origins in graffiti have often led him to be compared to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s.
