The News VIII is a signed screen print in colours produced by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2017. The circular print depicts an abstract composition composed of graphic shapes and lines rendered in bold and vibrant colours. The viewer gets the impression they are seeing a close-up section of a larger image, reflecting KAWS’ interest in and experimentation with abstraction.
The print is one of nine screen prints that compose The News collection. The News VIII is one of the more abstract prints in the collection. While other prints in the collection show discernible facial features, it is impossible to identify what is actually being depicted in this print from this isolating angle.
The News collection captures the essence of KAWS’ artistic style and visual language, characterised by an emphasis on colour, incorporation of bold lines and use of a set of distinctive graphics, such as crosses. KAWS first gained notoriety amongst the graffiti world and rose to fame in the late 1990s through his experimentation with art and design. The artist will be remembered due to his remarkable ability to bridge the gap between street art and high art, much like his predecessors, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
