The News I is a signed screen print in colours produced by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2017. The circular print shows a close-up section of a cartoon character’s face. One blue eye can be seen amongst an array of abstract shapes and colours and the angle isolates the body part from the rest of the character’s face, abstracting it from its surroundings. The eye features KAWS’ trademark cross over the pupil, rendered in a light turquoise. Crossed out eyes are a signature element of KAWS’ visual language and crosses are incorporated into almost all of the artist’s works.
This print is part of The News collection, a series of nine screen prints in colours, all of which use a circular shape for the print’s design. The choice of shape makes this collection stand out from others made by KAWS in which the artist opts for a more conventional rectangular design. The collection can be compared to the Blame Game collection, produced earlier in 2014, in which KAWS produced ten screen prints which showed close-up sections of a cartoon character’s face, much like he does in this collection.
The colours used by KAWS in The News I are bright and bold. KAWS’ frequent use of vibrant colours, as well as his affinity with the screen printing technique have often led to the artist being compared to Andy Warhol, the leading figure of the Pop Art movement.
