Meaning & Analysis
Taken from the artist’s Standing People series from 2020, Blue White Black Yellow is a lenticular print that shows four full-length figures, each rendered in a different colour. Set against a bright orange backdrop, this print is eye-catching and immediately recognisable as Opie’s work due to the use of bold line, simplified shapes and use of people as its subject.
Opie is considered to be a painter of modern life, creating work based on photographs but simplified to their basic and most minimal elements by which a person or object can be recognised. Blue White Black Yellow shows the figures dressed in distinctly modern clothing characteristic of the 2010s, depicted in bright saturated colours reminiscent of the visual language of computer games and mass advertising.
Repeating the same subject with variations across an entire series, Opie himself has described his work to be like ‘objects in an Ikea catalogue.’ Since the mid-1990s, Opie has explored the principles of modular variation across artistic media and subject matter. The Standing People series consists of similar titles, each with the same square format and showing four figures, different in every print. Opie emphasises art as a commodity in his replication of post-industrial modes of production and exposes the dehumanising effects of computer technology.
