Luc And Ludivine Get Married (pair 05) shows two portraits of a man and woman, each with elliptical frames and blown domed glazing. The images are produced from cut black and white paper laminated together and resemble Victorian silhouette portraits.
Luc And Ludivine Get Married (pair 05) is representative of Opie’s fascination with the human body and the genre of portraiture. The series as a whole explores various combinations of poses between the two figures, repeating the subject multiple times but each work has a unique composition. In this work, Opie shows the figures facing inwards towards one another, creating one of the more traditional compositions of the entire series.
Typical of many of Opie’s portraits, Luc And Ludivine Married (pair 05) is rendered with the absolute minimum by which a person can be represented. Reduced to black and white bold lines, the images show the figures with dots for eyes and simple lines for their mouth. Opie is interested in depicting people as a means to represent the mundanities of modern life and explore what it is to be human.
