Meaning & Analysis

The figure in Nurse captures the essence of Opie’s unique visual style which is characterised by his use of simple figures and forms drawn using thick outlines which are then filled with blocks of flat colour. Opie’s style was heavily influenced by Minimalism and Pop Art, as well as the comic book imagery of Roy Lichtenstein and the bold outlines of Patrick Caulfield.

Nurse can be seen alongside a range of other prints in Opie’s Walking In London collection. Each print in this collection shows a figure, depicted from side-on, captured in motion, walking across the composition. None of the figures have faces which reinforces how these are ordinary people going about their daily lives. Indeed, the subjects depicted in Walking In London could be anyone which reflects Opie’s fascination with depicting everyday reality.

  • Julian Opie, born in 1958, dances through the contemporary art scene with a distinctive digital allure. A trailblazer of the 1980s New British Sculpture movement, Opie's work is a highly stylised blend of Pop Art and minimalism which navigates the intersection of technology and visual expression. From his early experiments with computer-generated art to his iconic portraits and animated installations, Opie's work exudes a captivating simplicity. His signature style, marked by bold lines and reduced forms, is internationally recognisable and has made him a key player in British contemporary art.
