Showing a highly abstract and minimalist view of a Cornish seascape, Cornish Coast 2: Gribbin Peninsular is a digital print from Julian Opie’s Cornish Coast series (2017). The print is rendered in varying shades of blue block colours, characteristic of many of Opie’s landscape prints.
Combining the vernacular of everyday life with the canonical styles and traditions of art history, this print presents a twenty-first century version of the classic art historical genre of landscape painting. Cornish Coast 2: Gribbin Peninsular is cut horizontally by the horizon, the sky depicted in an almost-white tone filling two-thirds of the composition.
This print is created from photographs taken by the artist on holiday in Cornwall, later scanned and altered digitally. The composition is void of detail and simplified through the use of block flattened colour. Opie produces a generic image of the landscape that strikes a sense of familiarity within the viewer. Opie has explained of his simplified style, “Things in my experience don’t look photographic. When I recall the things I did in a day, for example, it’s not as a series of photographs, high resolution pictures. It’s a series of images which resemble symbols and signs. It’s like another language.”
