Cornish Coast 2: Gribbin Head is a print from Julian Opie’s Cornish Coast series from 2017, featuring a highly stylised landscape image. Depicted in block colour and simplified shapes this print is indicative of Opie’s skill in creating an image with the absolute minimum by which the subject can be recognised. Notably this image uses angular shapes and contrasts between light and dark to create a flattened composition.
Created using computer drawing programmes to manipulate digital photographs, these prints are inspired by holidays taken by the artist to Cornwall. Much of Opie’s work has been compared to the digitally rendered landscapes of video games in the way that they mimic a simultaneously familiar yet otherworldly sphere. Indeed, this print is uncanny in the sense of familiarity it strikes within the viewer, in part due to Opie’s depersonalised, slick style rendered through computer technology.
Speaking of his minimalist style the artist has said: “My aim is always realism but not in the sense of photographic detail, more the realism of a glance or a memory or the feeling of being immersed all day in a view. Then I come back to London and draw all this in computer-sharp lines with inkjet printers on plastics and glass.”
