Biography

Born in 1977, James McQueen is a British artist who has made significant contributions to Contemporary Art. Residing between London and New York, he has been active in the art scene since 2017, creating works that engage with appropriation, language, and the human experience.

McQueen's works often appropriate iconic imagery, such as book covers and popular culture symbols, echoing the practices of artists like Andy Warhol. McQueen’s art repurposes the design and branding of a low-cost, widely consumed product, echoing Warhol’s use of branded items in his Campbell’s Soup series. Like Warhol, McQueen elevates the everyday object, transforming these book covers into bold, confronting works.

McQueen's artistic practice is characterised by an interplay of humour and social commentary. His Penguin book print collection reimagines the iconic design of Penguin book covers, replacing traditional titles with satirical phrases.

His 2022 screenprint, Happiness Is Expensive, exemplifies this approach by using appropriation, a technique rooted in Pop Art where artists repurpose familiar imagery. By substituting a book title with a phrase that critiques the commodification of happiness, McQueen invites viewers to question the commercialisation of well-being. This playful, yet sharp commentary aligns with Pop Art’s use of humour and ambiguity, challenging viewers to reconsider their assumptions about consumer culture and the messages embedded in everyday objects.

Between November 2023 and January 2024, Halcyon Gallery in London held an exhibition of McQueen's work titled If You Ever Leave Me I'm Coming With You. The exhibition delved into Pop Art and abstraction, with McQueen transforming these uniform consumer products into personalised expressive objects with marks of wear that reflect interaction between the commodity and the individual. This exhibition marks a development in McQueen's career, highlighting his ability to merge cultural commentary with personal, tactile elements.
