This signed screen print from 2006 is a limited edition of 150 from Invader’s Rubikcubism series. The vertical print shows the most well-recognised and famous scene from Stanely Kubrick’s iconic horror movie, The Shining. It portrays Jack Torrence, brought to life by Jack Nicholson, in a pivotal moment of the movie, where he is attempting to chase his wife and son but is blocked by the locked door which he insistently tries to knock down.
Possibly Invader’s most famous Rubikcube work, this piece was produced in 2005 for the first two shows where the artist introduced the art world to his Rubikcubism series, first Rubik Space at the Galerie Patricia Dorfmann in Paris, and then Rubikcubism at Six Space, Los Angeles.
Invader’s rendition of The Shining achieves unimaginable levels of complexity through the juxtaposition of hundreds of Rubik Cubes. Echoing his counterpart, Clockwork Orange, where similarly Invader pays a tribute to the master of horror movies Stanely Kubrick - hence the pun on the name of the print, Rubrik Kubrik - this print can also be seen as foreshadowing and anticipating Invader’s Bad Men series (see here Scream II), where similarly he portrays infamous villains drawn from iconic movies.
