Meaning & Analysis

Indian View C, as the name suggests, is the third image Hodgkin painted after one of his numerous trips to India. The artist first visited the Indian Peninsula in 1964, and fell so in love with it that he decided to return almost every year, dedicating many of his paintings to the beautiful memories he made there. Here in this print, the steep blue triangle, against a lighter blue background, suggests a mountain environment, which the artist probably stumbled upon during one of his beloved train rides.

Known for depicting “representational pictures of emotional situations”, Hodgkin once again succeeds in conveying a sense of blissful serenity in this print: “Hodgkin captures a psychological moment in time, a touching glimpse of reverie and existential melancholy that is descriptive far beyond more detailed illustration.”
