Standing tall, its branches bare and its trunk gnarled, an old tree awaits the arrival of spring. The sky behind is an overcast pinkish grey, the grass at its feet and the hills behind a vibrant green. It is only the 22nd of March in Hockney’s series of prints documenting the arrival of the season of rebirth, and this tree has a little while longer to go before blossom turns to leaves. A pastoral landscape, this view of a typical Yorkshire scene marks a contrast with Hockney’s best known work, poolsides filled with Californian light and intimate portraits. Here the artist has turned his attention back to his native countryside, studying it from the 1st of January to the 2nd of June in order to capture the many changes – from the miniscule to the monumental – which make up the move from winter to spring to summer. Hockney left California in the early 2000s after more than three decades of living on the West Coast which is famous for its lack of seasons. Having left London because of its greyness, in California he found a sharp bright light which would pervade his paintings and drawings. Now in his old age the artist has come back to the various colours and lights of Northern England, captured beautifully here in an iPad drawing.
