The Arrival Of Spring In Woldgate East Yorkshire 12th April 2011 - No. 1 by David Hockney is a digital print created in 2011. This artwork, part of a series documenting spring's progression, captures the Yorkshire landscape's transformation during the onset of the spring season. Hockney used an iPad to create this piece, which is one of the digital drawings later produced as prints in an edition of 25.
In this work, Hockney employs digital technology to depict East Yorkshire's evolving landscape. The composition features a tree with new foliage, its green leaves contrasting against remnant bare branches which extend out of the left side of the composition. This juxtaposition visually represents the transition from winter to spring. Hockney's use of the iPad allowed for immediate capture of the scene's vibrant colours and changing light conditions. The artwork is part of a larger series that systematically documents spring's arrival across multiple dates, providing a comprehensive visual record of seasonal change. This approach reflects Hockney's interest in exploring time and nature through art. The artist's return to Yorkshire after years in California adds context to the series, highlighting his renewed engagement with his native landscape. The digital medium enabled Hockney to blend traditional landscape subject matter with contemporary artistic techniques, resulting in a distinctive visual style.
