In contrast to the first portrait of Hockney’s mother in the Moving Focus series, Portrait Of Mother II shows the artist experimenting with the Cubist influence that runs throughout the portfolio. Here he has chosen to depict his mother sleeping in an armchair, her head tilted to the side, her hands crossed in her lap. While at first glance it appears like a traditional portrait, the artist has added a block of colour to her face which throws the perspective off balance and recalls Picasso’s cubist portraits. Despite this unexpected element the work remains a tender portrait, its soft colours and marks making it stand out from the brashness of some of the other works in this series. The blue of his mother’s jumper perfectly complements the white of her collar and the brown back of her chair. Here we see Hockney working deftly with the medium of lithography, recreating his natural painting and drawing style on stone to produce a vivid work that both looks back at art history and claims its own style.
