Meaning & Analysis

A delicate study of this large kind of daisy, Marguerites depicts a swirl of flowers competing for space in what appears to be a tumbler. While this is an etching the work comes across as a watercolour with its delicate tones and lack of defining outlines. The glass itself is expertly rendered, convincing in its transparency and the depiction of the water level. While still and flat the composition is suffused in movement and life, the marguerites vying for light and attention, seemingly eager to please the viewer. The work is representative of Hockney's skill at depicting flowers which has occupied a large part of his extensive career, across painting, drawing and printmaking. Within print he has worked across etching, lithography, screen printing and has even used an office photocopier to create experimental effects as well as realist depictions of this natural beauty. Most recently the artist has turned to digital drawing as his preferred method and many of the works he produces as iPad prints today have roots in these earlier studies which allowed him to become a virtuoso of light and space.
