Meaning & Analysis
The Cure (midnight blue, neon green, fizzy pink) is a silkscreen print by Damien Hirst on Somerset Tub. The print, which was produced in 2014, shows a two-colour pill, rendered by Hirst in neon green and fizzy pink against a dark midnight blue backdrop. The bright colours of the pill stand out against the dark background colour, demanding that the viewer looks at the pill and reads what is written on it in faded letters, ‘this end up’.
The Cure (midnight blue, neon green, fizzy pink) is one of thirty silkscreen prints that compose Hirst’s The Cure series. In this series, Hirst repeats the formula of rendering a singular pill in a combination of two colour tones against a bold and vibrant coloured backdrop. The printing technique Hirst uses, as well as the repetition of subject matter is clearly influenced by the work of Andy Warhol, who rose to fame in America in the 1960s and has become known as the father of the Pop Art movement.
By making a pharmaceutical product into art, Hirst blurs the boundaries between art and science in this print, demanding that we appreciate the art behind science. Hirst has had a longstanding fascination with science and medicine and has produced many artworks that are inspired by pharmaceutical products.
