H9-1 Justice is a laminated giclée print on aluminium composite panel by the renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print depicts a beautiful array of cherry blossoms in full bloom. The blossoms are rendered in light pink tones against a vibrant blue background. The soft pinks contrast with the blue sky, drawing attention to the natural beauty of the flowers.
H9-1 Justice is part of the H9 The Virtues series, a collection of eight prints, each of which is dedicated to portraying the magnificence of the cherry blossoms. Each print in the series is named after one of ‘The Eight Virtues of Bushidō’ according to Nitobe Inazō -Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty, and Control. The H9 The Virtues series is part of a wider project, dedicated to cherry blossoms. Hirst created over 100 works which will be exhibited for the first time at the Fondation Cartier in Paris in July, 2021.The H9 The Virtues series harks back to Hirst’s fascination with spots and methodological approach to art. Each blossom in H9-1 Justice is made out of tiny coloured dots, like those in Hirst’s iconic Spot series.
The subject matter of H9-1 Justice is deeply personal. The artist admired the cherry blossoms from an early age, admitting, “I feel alive when I’m painting them.” Hirst recounts how he remembers watching his mother paint a cherry blossom tree and how his love for the blossoms continued throughout his life, explaining how he was enchanted by the cherry blossom tree outside his bedroom window when he was living in Devon.
