Meaning & Analysis
Fight is a silkscreen print by the critically acclaimed contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print was produced in 2017 and depicts the packaging of a pharmaceutical product. Hirst renders the tablet packaging in a lime green with splashes of fuchsia. These unconventional colours accompany the unusual name given to the medication, ‘Fight’. In this print, Hirst combines science and art by detailing the contents of the tablets and using accurate scientific terminology to make the image seem like a real pharmaceutical product.
Fight is accompanied by eleven other prints in Hirst’s Eat the Rich series. Each print in the series follows a similar format, appropriating pharmaceutical packaging for the purpose of art. As seen in Fight, Hirst replaces the tablet name on the packaging depicted in the print for a carefully chosen word that implies violence or force. The series is characterised by a distinct minimalist design which reflects the clinical precision of the medical profession. Hirst’s interest in medicine is longstanding and the artist pursued this theme earlier in his artistic career with the Medicine Cabinets series from the 1980s.
The influence of conceptual sculptors such as Sol Le Witt and Donald Judd can be seen in the minimalist design of the packaging in Fight. The print also encapsulates Hirst’s fascination with the human body and the way in which medicine interacts with the body, purporting extreme healing powers.
