Meaning & Analysis

The tapestry is one of twelve square tapestries which are part of Hirst’s Enter The Infinite collection. Each tapestry in this collection follows a similar formula using red, blue, green and yellow thread to produce a kaleidoscope pattern. The tapestries are all made using a Jacquard loom which was invented in 1804 by French weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard. The loom was an important piece of technology that revolutionised the production of textiles as it meant that complex patterns could be produced by unskilled workers in a fraction of the time.

Hirst is widely recognised as an artist who works across different mediums. The artist is arguably best remembered for his installations in which dead animals were showcased in glass vitrines, preserved in formaldehyde. Hirst also garnered critical acclaim for his Spot paintings and Spin paintings.

  • Damien Hirst, born in Bristol in 1965, is often hailed the enfant terrible of the contemporary art world. His provocative works challenge conventions and his conceptual brilliance spans installations, paintings, and sculptures, often exploring themes of mortality and the human experience. As a leading figure of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement in the late '80s, Hirst's work has dominated the British art scene for decades and has become renowned for being laced with controversy, thus shaping the dialogue of modern art.
