Meaning & Analysis
Red Bird And Parrot With Shark Jaw (small) is a signed lithograph print produced by renowned contemporary artist, Damien Hirst. The print comes in two variations, one large and one small. In this print, Hirst depicts two birds next to each other. To the left of the composition is a parrot with striking red, yellow and blue feathers. Next to it, to the right of the composition, Hirst draws a little red bird. The two birds are sitting casually atop a wooden column, unknowingly, behind them, Hirst includes the jaws of a shark.
The print was made in 2012 to celebrate the occasion of Hirst’s exhibition, Two Weeks One Summer, which was on display at the White Cube Bermondsey in 2012.
The print is rendered in dark, bold colours, making it more sombre than other works produced for the exhibition, such as Two Parrots and Two Birds With Blossom. The inclusion of the shark jaws, which appear wide open behind the birds, act as an ominous warning representing the inevitability of death and the fragility of life. Hirst is fascinated with questions of life and death and often explores these themes in his artworks.
