Meaning & Analysis

The print is rendered in vibrant and bold colours, with reds and blues dominating the composition. Not only does the work demonstrate Hirst’s excellent draughtsmanship, it also captures his love for colour and incorporating bright colours into his works. This is most evident in the Kaleidoscope series and Hirst’s critically acclaimed Spot series.

The print was made in 2012 to celebrate the occasion of Hirst’s exhibition, Two Weeks One Summer, which was on display at the White Cube Bermondsey in 2012. The vitrine surrounding the bird is a reference to the way Hirst often incorporates such structures into his artistic installations. The earliest example of this is A Thousand Years, made in 1990, which was an installation composed of a pair of interlinked glass cells which hosted a colony of flies that were feeding off a rotting cow’s head.
