Meaning & Analysis

Hand And Flowers resonates strongly with many of Warhol’s early illustrations from the 1950s. After moving to New York in 1949, Warhol worked as a freelance illustrator for various commercial brands. The artist produced drawings of clothes, shoes and handbags for a number of popular fashion magazines like Vogue, Glamour Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar. It was during this period that Warhol honed his excellent draughtsmanship skills, appreciation of colour and innovative approach to composition, which shines through in this print and many of his other drawings.

Hand And Flowers is an elegant print which is much more simple than many of Warhol’s more abstract still life drawings. The print can be seen alongside Warhol’s collection of screen prints, Flowers (Hand-Coloured) which the artist made later in 1974. This collection is similarly marked by a use of thin gestural lines, simple colours and a minimalist composition.

  • Andy Warhol was a leading figure of the Pop Art movement and is often considered the father of Pop Art. Born in 1928, Warhol allowed cultural references of the 20th century to drive his work. From the depiction of glamorous public figures, such as Marilyn Monroe, to the everyday Campbell’s Soup Can, the artist challenged what was considered art by blurring the boundaries between high art and mass consumerism. Warhol's preferred screen printing technique further reiterated his obsession with mass culture, enabling art to be seen as somewhat of a commodity through the reproduced images in multiple colour ways.
