Edward Kennedy Deluxe Edition (F. & S. II.241) is a signed screen print with diamond dust on Lenox Museum Board from 1980 which was produced by the renowned Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Coming in an edition size of 50 the print shows a portrait of the American politician, Edward Kennedy, posing confidently in a smart suit and tie. Kennedy is rendered in black and white against a striped backdrop. Warhol adds colourful gestural lines to the image of Kennedy to delineate his facial features and hair.
The print was produced by Warhol to raise money for Kennedy’s 1980 Presidential campaign and the image used as the basis for this print was a Polaroid taken by Warhol himself. Edward Kennedy Deluxe Edition (F. & S. II.241) can be seen alongside Edward Kennedy which uses the same image of the politician but sets him against a plain backdrop.
While Warhol is known for his obsession with fame and celebrity culture and is remembered for his depictions of American stars like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley, the artist also produced various works in which he depicted political figures. As well as transforming Edward Kennedy into a 20th century Pop Art icon, Warhol also produced prints of politicians like Chairman Mao and Vladimir Lenin.
