Meaning & Analysis
This small etching was produced in 2013 by Young British Artist, Tracey Emin. At the top of the composition are the words “LOVE YOU”, written in Emin’s distinctive and naive handwriting, with the letter “Y” written backwards. Underneath these romantic words is a small abstracted figure, composed with a continuous line of ink, which forms a backwards “L” shape and therefore compliments the text element of the print.
Perpetually fascinated by love and romance, Emin’s Love You is testament to her ability to produce sentimental works which are both personal and relatable. The small figure at the bottom of the illustration forms a backwards “L” shape, complimenting the romantic words above it rather like an illustrated children’s book. In her typical style, Emin merges poetic prose with witty illustration, revealing the universality of love and the naive giddiness it instils.
