Meaning & Analysis
This 2014 lithograph was created by Tracey Emin as part of her The Last Great Adventure Is You series. Within this nude self-portrait, the artist has rendered her nude form in her distinctively sketchy and spontaneous style. Emin’s womanly figure reclines along the composition, with a light wash of blue framing her body and a fluid series of lines mimicking her pose to the right.
From this body of work which was exhibited at the White Cube in the same year, we witness Emin’s increasingly self-reflective approach. I Think Of You is an honest and unflinching view into Emin’s world. Emin blots out her face with expressive scribbles of black ink in this self-portrait, perhaps in an attempt to give the work a sense of universality for her female viewers. Despite her portrait appearing faceless however, Emin appears in deep contemplation, thinking about the individual she has dedicated the work and exhibition to.
Behind her nude figure, fluid lines are printed like a ghostly apparition or aura, adding to the spirituality Emin sees so integral to her life and work. Emin’s persistent reference to self in her work has made her body of work something of a documentation of her life and growth. I Think Of You, like The Last Great Adventure Is You in its entirety, is “about rites of passage, of time and age, and the simple realisation that we are always alone” (Emin, July 2014).
