Characteristically crude, No Idea is a playful etching that merges satirical text with a nude figure typical of Tracey Emin’s work. To the right of the composition, a gaudy nude woman appears to crawl on the floor next to a procession of small penises jumping over a bar. Above this bizarre illustration is the text reading “NO IDEA WHY THEY CAN JUMP SO HIGH”, adding to the nonsensical tone of the piece. Beneath the print is the title of the work in the bottom left, and Emin’s signature and the edition number of the print to the right.
Emin is an artist known for her deeply confessional and diaristic approach to art. That being said, she is also an artist keen to show her less serious side to her viewers and critics. No Idea is a lighthearted and witty work, picturing three animated penises high-jumping over a bar as a nude woman crawls across the composition. Emin’s text only adds to the humorous tone of the work, and is testament to the importance of not taking her - or her art - too seriously.
