This melancholic etching was created by Tracey Emin in 2010, and forms part of our Nude Self-Portraits collection. Emin’s focal composition appears at the centre of a white paper background with wide margins, and pictures the artist lying nude on a clinical-looking bed. Above this illustration are two lines of text written by Emin, which reads: “At night I can’t sleep anymore my mind is wrapped in unknown fear”.
Known for her poignant mingling of text and image, Emin envelopes her work with sentiments that are often universally relatable. At Night presents Emin’s nude figure, sprawled across a clinical-looking bed. While deeply personal, the work is also relatable to viewers who have experienced this kind of insomniatic anxiety. Through her marriage of the unsettling illustration with disturbing text, Emin forces her viewers to recall memories similar to those she depicts.
For Emin, the bed has been a recurring and iconic motif in her work. Emin’s bed is a site where some of her most traumatic and memorable episodes have taken place. In the case of At Night, the clinical bed thar Emin’s nude figure lays on is a discomforting and troubled site - not unlike her seminal 1998 work My Bed.
