This small etching was created by Tracey Emin in 2013, and forms part of the Animals collection. Similar to the printed illustrations of children’s books, Emin simply renders the animals from which this work takes its title. On the left is Emin’s baby rabbit, shown in profile with its ears standing upright. On the right is her squirrel, rendered a little less delicately and playing with a branch.
With a characteristically dainty handling of line, Emin’s Baby Rabbit & Squirrel is testament to the artist’s mastery over the printed medium. Like many other works from our Animals collection of her work, this etching bears an unmistakably Emin handling of line and a childlike naivety in its subject matter. Almost like the illustrations from children’s short stories and fables, Baby Rabbit & Squirrel convey a youthful innocence that Emin seeks to enliven in her viewers.
