No! This Is Sad (2021) by Tracey Emin shows a loosely drawn figure, nude and partially submerged in deep blue washes, the face veiled in shadow. It was released in conjunction with Emin’s exhibition A Journey To Death at the Carl Freedman Gallery.
No! This Is Sad carries a heavy stillness. The figure’s expression is hard to read, but something in the posture, the broken outline of the body, and the unresolved edges suggests grief or resignation. Emin’s line is instinctive and uneven, more concerned with presence than precision. This print continues the themes that run through much of her recent work - mortality, the body, and emotional aftermath - without spelling them out. It feels less like a statement than a moment caught, unresolved and quietly insistent.
