Through her typically playful handling of composition, Tracey Emin’s My Beautiful Legs 2 pictures the artist’s legs suspended from the top of the print. Executed in blue ink, Emin delineates her legs with her characteristically fine line, with primary focus on her platform heeled shoes. Beneath the print is the title of the work in the bottom left, and Emin’s signature and the edition number of the print to the right.
Emin has never been afraid to put her life, thoughts, and experiences on show for the world to see. My Beautiful Legs 2 is no exception to her relentless confessional approach to art. Like many of her self-portraits and installations, the work is a small celebration of Emin’s own body. As the title of the work would suggest, Emin wants the world to know just how beautiful her legs are. With a playful focus on her platform heels, Emin draws immediate attention to the womanly nature of her body and champions her femininity.
Tracey Emin, born in 1963, stands as a fearless provocateur in the contemporary art scene. A trailblazer of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement in the late 1980s, the artist has sparked conversation and controversy for decades. Confronting themes of love, trauma and femininity with great vulnerability, Emin's work is a visceral tapestry of her life and has forged an intimate dialogue between artist and audience. In 1999, this raw approach to storytelling won her a nomination to the Turner Prize and, in 2007, it got her a coveted spot as a Royal Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA).
