Hurt Heart (2022) is a lithograph by Tracey Emin which forms part of her A Journey to Death series, made during a period marked by illness and recovery. Like much of Emin’s practice, it draws on personal experience to touch on broader questions of pain, survival, and the fragility of the body.
The image shows a figure with a tilted head and heavy-lidded eyes, surrounded by tangled, almost frantic lines. One side of the face is obscured in a dark blur; the other remains open, vulnerable. The marks feel urgent, sometimes unresolved, as though the figure is caught in a moment of emotional disarray. Despite its looseness, the composition feels tightly held. There’s a sense of the image pressing against its own edges, resisting form even as it seeks it.
