Lucian Freud’s Large Head (1993) is an etching of Leigh Bowery, a frequent and imposing presence in Freud’s later work. The head and upper torso are rendered with a density of line that brings weight to the figure. Bowery’s features appear both exaggerated and grounded, the result of prolonged observation rather than stylisation.
The etched surface of Lucian Freud’s Large Head emphasises the volume of Bowery’s form, with light and shadow used to build mass across the shoulders and face. The sitter’s eyes are closed, withdrawing from view, while the rest of the figure remains confrontational in its scale and directness. As in much of Freud’s portraiture, the focus is less on likeness than on sustained scrutiny, making Large Head a study in physicality as much as character.
