Originally painted with watercolour, this is an unusual image by L. S. Lowry called People Standing About from 1972. The print shows an image of a group of people walking along a pavement or standing, waiting to cross the street. This is a tightly cropped composition and is depicted from a level view with the figures. Lowry very faintly depicts an industrial background in this print, with soft pastel colours.
Lowry seldom worked in watercolour as it is a far more fleeting medium than oil paint, drying very quickly and therefore not that flexible to work with. It is rare to see a Lowry watercolour and often his watercolour works like People Standing About are more vibrant in colour, this particular print showing contrasting colours such as green, burnt orange and blue.
Insistent on the fact that his portraits of people were of those he saw in and around Greater Manchester, this print shows a great variety of people from all walks of life. People Standing About is a print that is indicative of Lowry’s fascination with people and their unique qualities or quirks, prompting the viewer to look at the human presence in his famous landscape paintings differently.
Born in 1887, L. S. Lowry was a key figure in 20th century British painting. Known for his distinctive painterly style and 'matchstick men', Lowry aimed to put industry on the map by typically focusing on scenes from his hometown in the North West of England. The naivety of his art drew criticism, yet has stood the test of time with the artist becoming a household name.
