What Party (red on blue) is a signed screen print made by the acclaimed American artist and designer KAWS in 2020. The print comes in an edition size of 100 and shows KAWS’ much-loved cartoon character, Companion. Captured in a head and shoulders portrait, Companion is rendered in bright red against a dark blue backdrop.
Companion is one of KAWS’ original cartoon creations and features in many of KAWS’ artworks. The character can be identified by its distinct figure which is reminiscent of Mickey Mouse as well as its skull and crossbone head and crossed out eyes. Other notable figurative characters created by KAWS include Accomplice, Chum and Bendy. These cartoon characters appear repeatedly in KAWS’ artworks and often recur in different settings in slightly different iterations.
What Party (red on blue) is part of the What Party collection. Alongside another screen print, What Party (yellow on blue), KAWS created five Companion figures in black, white, pink, yellow and orange. KAWS’ cartoon characters were all initially drawn in 2D and born out of his experimentations with graffiti and his time spray painting in New York. Since the artist’s rise to fame, however, many of his cartoons have been realised in 3D, as is the case with Companion in this collection.
