No Reply 5 is a signed screen print in colours on wove paper produced by renowned American artist and designer KAWS in 2015. The print depicts a close-up section of a larger composition. Through the use of the close-up, KAWS hints playfully to something that is going on outside the frame, piquing the viewers’ interest and curiosity. The print captures KAWS’ unique visual style, characterised by an emphasis on colour, bold gestural lines and a set of distinct graphics. No Reply 5 features one of KAWS’ most iconic motifs, the crossed out eye.
The print is part of KAWS’ No Reply collection, a body of 10 screen prints, all of which depict abstract compositions composed of cartoon inspired shapes. Some of the prints appear to be sections of a cartoon’s face, while others are more abstract, making it hard for the viewer to discern what they are looking at. An eye is visible in No Reply 5, however the rest of the composition remains a mystery.
KAWS’ visual style was strongly influenced by graffiti and street culture. KAWS started experimenting with graffiti as a teenager when he lived in New Jersey. The artist continued practising street art when he moved to New York to study illustration in the 1960s. It was through spray painting the streets of New York that the artist developed many of the visual motifs that he uses today in his artworks.
