Meaning & Analysis

The print is part one of 10 screen prints that compose the No Reply collection. When viewed alongside the other prints in the No Reply collection, it becomes apparent that No Reply 10 shows a close-up section of a cartoon character’s face. The collection resonates with other collections, such as Blame Game, which also privileges the close-up and isolates sections of a cartoon character’s face.

The No Reply collection reflects KAWS’ love for cartoons and fascination with them. The artist explains how he ‘found it weird how infused a cartoon could become in people's lives; the impact it could have.’ KAWS often incorporates cartoon imagery and cartoon figures into his artworks, experimenting with creating his own characters, as well as adapting and appropriating already well-known ones.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
