Meaning & Analysis
No Reply 1 is a signed screen print in colours on wove paper made by the renowned American artist and designer, KAWS. Produced in 2015, the print, which comes in an edition size of 100, depicts a section of a cartoon character’s face. The close-up challenges the viewer to question what lies outside the frame of the composition and encourages them to think imaginatively and create their own cartoon scene. The character is rendered in bold and vibrant colours, a characteristic feature of KAWS’ distinct graphic style.
No Reply 1 is one of 10 screen prints that form the No Reply collection. Viewed in isolation, it is hard to discern what the prints in this series are showing, however when viewed together, it becomes apparent that they are all depicting parts of a cartoon character.
KAWS has had a longstanding interest in animation and cartoons. The artist studied illustration at the New York School of Visual Arts, where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1996. He then went on to work as a freelance animator for Jumbo Pictures where he designed the backgrounds for well-known cartoon series such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug. KAWS’ early career in animation shines through in this collection and marks his unique visual style.
