Man’s Best Friend 3 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford High White paper produced in 2016 by renowned American artist and designer, KAWS. The print comes in an edition size of 100 and is part of a collection of 10 screen prints, all of which pay homage to the much-loved cartoon character, Snoopy, from the Peanuts comic strip. KAWS renders Snoopy using thick white lines scrawled onto a black backdrop. The close-up of Snoopy and sketch-like style of the drawing makes it hard for the viewer to discern what they are looking at. Viewed alongside the other prints in the collection makes it apparent that the image is an abstract take on the beloved cartoon character.
The style of this print differs from previous depictions of Snoopy done by KAWS which are characterised by their use of bold colours and simple visual style. The Man’s Best Friend collection has a looser, more expressionist style, making it stand out from KAWS’ other collections.
KAWS often turns to cartoons for artistic inspiration. As well as Snoopy, KAWS has used popular cartoon characters such as the Smurfs, The Simpsons and SpongeBob Square Pants as the basis of his artworks. KAWS always adapts these cartoon characters, rendering them in his unique, graffiti inspired style.
